Political Thinkers: Steve Bannon and Andrew Breitbart

photo"The NYC Political Forum"

We'll continue the "Political Thinkers" series. It critically examines the political and ideological viewpoints of prominent public figures, considered to be tremendously influential as a trendsetter.

Here, the goal is to discuss fresh viewpoints -- some of which might be "unconventional" in nature -- in analyzing its applicability in our ever-increasingly complex society. Just like every issue that our group discusses, we examine and evaluate it with an independent and critical lens, at the highest level of intellectual rigor.

For this discussion, we'll evaluate the work of Steve Bannon and the legacy of the late Andrew Breitbart. To that end, we'll explore the following questions:

- What are the deep-rooted philosophical basis for their theories and views?

- What makes their appeal so controversial?

- Have their views and positions always remained intellectually consistent?

- What do their rise to popularity indicate about the cultural or political climate of his time period?

We will then examine each individual's theories and policy positions, including:

BANNON
- His role in as the executive chair of Breitbart News.
- His nationalist views couched as "populism."
- His affiliation and appeasement to the Alt-Right.
- His criticism of traditional "capitalism."
- His opposition to the partisan establishment, including the pro-interventionist foreign policies
- The allegations of, and ties to, any xenophobic, nativist, racist, and pro-White Supremacist views and organizations.
- Finally, how his work and views, as well as the Breitbart organization influenced the Trump Presidency.

His collection of filmography are listed here: https://en.wikipedia....

BREITBART
- His transformation from a liberal to a conservative.
- How the news website of his namesake (Breitbart News) shaped the conservative media landscape.
- His role, as an activist, in shaping the conservative movement, for issues such as the government overreach and anti-liberalism.
- Breitbart and his news organization's ongoing criticisms of the institutional bias in the media and in Hollywood.
- Counterfactual analysis: if he were alive today -- his role as a media personality in the Era of Trump.

*** Finally, criticisms, if any, of Breitbart News, as an organization, in providing a platform for the Alt-Right and others with "extremist" views.
